COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, NMU students and local residents climbed 300 steps on Sugarloaf Mountain to honor those lost on 9/11, with seven trips symbolizing the 110 flights first responders climbed. Turning Point USA at NMU hosted the event with water, snacks, and custom bracelets and hopes the climb becomes an annual tradition. WZMQ 19
- ➤ At Marquette Senior High School, students learned about the Sept. 11 tragedy and planted a flag for each victim. At Jacobetti Home for Veterans, residents were treated to a lunch — featuring a pig roast and strawberry shortcake — that honored military service and remembered those who were lost. - ➤ Marquette County Hockey Night will take place Saturday night at Berry Events Center as a fundraiser for United Way, featuring a sled hockey game at 6:00 p.m. and a match at 7:00 p.m. between the Detroit Red Wings Alumni and Yoopers United—doors open at 5:00 p.m. Sunny 101.9
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Union workers at NMU are asking for changes in their contract as the deal for 125 staff expires October 1 at 12:01 a.m.—The university said they are in early talks and warned that protests may happen if no agreement is reached. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Phillip Brubaker, a millwright from the Negaunee Carpenter and Millwrights Apprentice Training Center, placed second at the Level Best Apprenticeship Competition in Wayland—Tom Lutz of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights said the contest shows the strength of local union apprentices and supports skill development. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Migrating birds are flying south as fall arrives with 50°F temperatures and local birders noted nearly 2,000 birds including 52 species leaving Presque Isle Park in a large morning movement. Counters at Whitefish Point recorded many species and observed shoreline changes (such as the loss of a resting pond and shifted foraging areas) that may affect future migrations. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Yesterday, Brookridge Heights sold homemade baked goods at its assisted living facility for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event. Residents helped make some items while director Lindsay Hemmila said their smiles showed fulfillment—an uplifting sign for the effort. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ First responders from the region started the U.P. EMS conference on Thursday and are learning ways to improve care today and tomorrow. Craig Johnson spoke on pediatric emergencies and vendors showed new emergency vehicles — the event helps responders share ideas to keep communities safe. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ The NMU men's soccer team held Lewis to a 0—0 draw in Romeoville as coach Fatovic said his team battled hard for every chance. NMU remains unbeaten in its first three matches and will travel by bus to face Lake Erie at 1 p.m. on Sunday. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Northern Michigan lost its fifth match in straight sets to No. 17 Barry University at the Husky Volleyball Invitational, with sets ending 21-25, 15-25, and 17-25—this drop moved the Wildcats to a 1-4 record. They will play Adelphi at 10 a.m. ET and face St. Cloud State at 3 p.m. ET later today as they try to improve their season. WZMQ 19
