COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mariucci Family Beacon House and Habitat for Humanity swapped property in Marquette; Beacon House traded one acre near U.P. Medical Center for land at 7th Street and West Spring Street—supporting plans for future expansion and a new project. Habitat will convert the acquired parking lot into seven two-bedroom houses—a plan that will start in the spring and take a couple of years.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • This weekend West Branch Township will host a tailgate party on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Township Hall—community members will enjoy food, craft vendors, live music, and a new car show while funds are raised for building a soccer field, baseball field, and disc golf course.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Feeding America West Michigan held a drive through food pantry event yesterday morning at Redemption Hill Church (332 South Carpenter Avenue, Kingsford) where residents provided their names and household numbers. They will host a similar drive through event today at Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift (219 Silver Creek Road, Chocolay Township) starting at 10 a.m. Eastern time with supplies for about 550 families.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Women’s Center placed fourth in the Rocket Community Challenge after raising $34,735 in donations during August and winning $3,500 plus a $250 Golden Ticket Prize — the funds will support its food pantry program and help supplement state and federal funding as the center plans new fundraising efforts for next year.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Jiikakamiigad Pow Wow will be held on Sept. 21 from noon to 7 p.m. at the Mining Heritage Pavilion across from Lake Bancroft—marking Ishpeming’s first powwow in 22 years and featuring dancing, crafts, a free feast, and a live performance by Indigenous rock band Waawiyeyaa.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University reported over 7,300 students two weeks into fall classes—down 0.3% from last year and recording record retention rates. Michigan Tech enrolled more than 7,400 students with a 6% larger incoming class and an average GPA of 3.86.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education is asking residents for feedback on a plan to update district facilities using an eight-page survey and info sessions at the Marquette Senior High School Little Theatre on Sept 22 and Sept 23—responses will be anonymous and results discussed at the school board meeting on Oct 13.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bear hunting season started yesterday in the Upper Peninsula with a five-day bait-only phase, and DNR specialist Cody Norton said the bear population is about 10,350. Hunters will use dogs from Monday and should process their harvest quickly—especially if warm weather persists—as the season ends Oct. 26.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The Marquette City Commission approved a contract with ORIN Technologies for in-situ remediation of the Cliffs-Dow Brownfield site at their Monday meeting, with work fully funded by an EPA grant awarded in September 2023—TriMedia Environmental helped review all bids before the unanimous vote.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Great Lakes Recovery Centers’ Run for Recovery event took place in Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie on September 10 and raised over $20,000 for its Compassionate Care Fund. Former NFL player Sean Jordan was honored as the event's honorary captain—he emphasized that treatment and recovery work while breaking the stigma around seeking help.  WZMQ 19
  • Upper Peninsula state legislators and Ironwood nurses are angry after Aspirus Healthcare announced on Friday that its OB/GYN services will end on Dec. 31—forcing many residents to drive longer distances for care in harsh winter conditions. Lawmakers and staff say the late notice and pattern of service cuts have left the community vulnerable to further challenges.  The Mining Journal
  • The annual Great Lakes Recovery Centers Run for Recovery took place on Wednesday in Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie—runners and walkers participated in 10K and 5K events to raise funds for essential recovery services. The event raised $20K through sponsorships and participants, marking its biggest year and showing growing community support.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Marquette County Hockey Night will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Berry Events Center on the Northern Michigan University campus in Marquette. Tailgating starts at 3 p.m. — doors open at 5 p.m. and the games are set to begin later, with the sled hockey game at 5:30 p.m. and the DRWA game at 7 p.m.  The Mining Journal
