  • Marquette Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly is looking for more volunteers to help older adults by offering non-emergency transportation, holiday meal assistance, and friendly visits—program manager Danielle Berg said the effort aims to reconnect isolated elders with the community.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UPAWS is hosting its 20th Annual Strut Your Mutt event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette—attendees can join an optional 1.5-mile walk, enjoy fun activities and dog contests, and help raise over $20,000 for homeless pets.  The Mining Journal

  • Marquette’s Economic Club of Marquette County will launch its new season with a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn on Monday evening, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m., and a talk by Todd Poquette at 7:30 p.m.—the meeting is open to the public.  Sunny 101.9

  • Northern Michigan University hosted an open house Tuesday for its outdoor sustainability lab on campus—community members and students filled out surveys to suggest ideas like hoop houses, seed libraries, and herb spirals for the evolving space.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Travel Marquette's summer initiative had local volunteers and visitors clean beaches and trails as they picked up 100 pounds of trash in 80 bags - with high school students working at McCarty's Cove and 38% of participants coming from out of town. The effort supports the agency's goal to keep Marquette County beautiful.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts at the Alzheimer’s Association conference at Northern Michigan University said a blood test that can predict Alzheimer’s may be available within a year and that testing antibodies before symptoms appear could slow the disease. They also gave caregivers simple communication tips—such as using yes/no questions—to help improve diagnosis and care.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UPHS Marquette now offers a virtual intensive outpatient program for behavioral healthcare for patients who cannot commute — Program Coordinator Galina Taylor said it helps those with transportation, social anxiety and time challenges while the in-person program remains at 1400 West Washington Street in Marquette.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On September 9, 2025, LeAnn Makela of Active Physical Therapy discussed vertigo treatment on Mark and Walt in the Morning—she explained how vertigo differs from simple dizziness, outlined its symptoms, and urged anyone experiencing them to seek prompt medical care.  Sunny 101.9

  • Detroit Red Wings alumni and Yoopers United players will face off on Saturday during Marquette County Hockey Night—a fundraiser for United Way that supports local programs. Tailgating starts at 3 p.m. and tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for youth.  Upper Michigan's Source
