- ➤ Northern Michigan University’s Food Pantry is now open for students, faculty and staff needing groceries, with volunteers reporting 225 to 275 monthly visits. Volunteers say the pantry stocks a wide range of items — not just ramen noodles — and they welcome shelf-stable donations. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Residents and visitors to Marquette County enjoyed the Farmers Market last Saturday—featuring a wide range of vegetable stalls and local crafts. The seasonal event will return only a few more times before closing on Oct. 25. The Mining Journal

- ➤ On Sept 28, the Ishpeming Area Historical Society will offer a tour of Cohodas family sites that includes visits to the Cohodas Warehouse and Cold Storage building, the Cohodas home and the Cohodas Lodge by Checker bus. Tickets will cost $150 at Main Street Antique Mall and include catered food, snacks, wine and beverages with about 50 tickets remaining—society president David Aeh said unique details about Sam Cohodas will be shared during the tour. - ➤ Joe Short, founder of Short’s Brewing Company, said he felt proud taking part in the 16th Annual Fall Beer Festival at Lower Harbor Park on Saturday—where thousands joined brewers through the Michigan Brewers Guild. - ➤ Drivers in Michigan now pay an average of $3.18 for regular unleaded gas—a 13-cent drop from last week as reported by AAA; Dickinson County shows the lowest price at $2.99 while Mackinac County has the highest at $3.44. Upper Michigan's Source
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Transportation is performing maintenance on the M-553 bridge over the Carp River in Marquette this week, which includes closing the southbound lane for concrete repairs. Motorists should expect one lane of alternating traffic with temporary traffic signals—work will be finished by Monday, Sept. 15. The Mining Journal
- ➤ City Commissioners awarded a clean-up contract to Orin Technologies from Verona for in-situ remediation of historical contamination at the former Cliffs-Dow site along North Lake Shore Boulevard — City Manager Karen Kovacs said work will start within the next year using grant funds, and residents may notice some activity near the lake though most work will occur underground. - ➤ Registered nurses at UPHS-Marquette ratified a new contract after two days of voting that guarantees an 18.75% wage increase over four years to boost staffing and retention + it also establishes a joint committee to review staffing and include grievances while keeping current health insurance benefits.
