COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, Sept 28, the Ishpeming Area Historical Society will host a bus tour of the Cohodas English Tudor Revival home built in 1943 and the restored Cohodas Lodge on Lake Michigamme as a fundraiser with tickets priced at $150. Checker Bus will depart from the Cliffs Shaft Museum parking lot at 1 p.m. (attendees are advised to arrive 15 minutes early) and return by 5 p.m.  The Mining Journal
  • The U.P. Fall Beer Fest was held Saturday at Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette with over 3,000 beer fans enjoying nearly 80 brewers. Ticket sales at $55 each raised an estimated $165,000 to support local brewing businesses—organizers said the event may have set a record for attendance.  The Mining Journal
  • Rock River Farm held its final bouquet workshop yesterday at Ore Dock Brewing Co.—people chose from over 100 flower types to create mason jar bouquets and learn how to dry them before the frost.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Jo-Kay Corral invites families to enjoy its farm every Saturday in September when weather permits; children can ride the hay wagon and see animals while pretzels are sold at Farmer Mac’s Snack Shack. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—each person pays $10 with kids 2 and under free.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marquette schools have met state immunization requirements for students by verifying vaccine or exemption documents for diseases such as whooping cough, measles, and chickenpox—officials from NICE Community and North Star Montessori say they follow CDC guidelines with flu clinics and proper handwashing to keep students ready for the fall virus season.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • UP Health System Marquette’s UP Medical Group acquired Surgical Associates of Marquette, P.C., forming UPHS Marquette Surgical Associates. The new team — which will offer more scheduling options and let patients keep seeing familiar providers — expands access to surgical care close to home.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fans packed local clubs on Sunday night to watch the Packers-Lions game—Negaunee Eagles Club and Marquette Elks Lodge opened just for the match to build membership and boost business. Bartender Dana Collins and club leader Kristina Eaton said the special Sunday openings may lead to more events like this in the future.  Upper Michigan's Source
