COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The U.P. Fall Beer Festival will return tomorrow at Mattson Lower Harbor Park from 1:00pm to 6:00pm — featuring craft beers from nearly 80 Michigan brewers. The 16th annual event also offers food trucks and live music, with tickets available online for adults 21 and older.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette’s 5th annual Art on the Mountain event will take place this weekend at Marquette Mountain from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both local and lower Michigan artists will show paintings, photographs, ceramics, woodwork and jewelry + food, live music and a bubble show will add to the fun while lift tickets will be available for purchase.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU Siril Concert Series is hosting musical duo Deux Saisons today at Reynolds Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.—the husband and wife pair and NMU music faculty will perform a mix of old and new classical pieces.  Sunny 101.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • The West End Health Foundation is offering fall grants to nonprofits that improve health in Marquette County's West End+ organizations can apply for amounts from $1,000 to $10,000 while groups focusing on food security may receive up to $40,000; applications close on September 26th.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The West End Health Foundation is accepting applications for two fall grant cycles aimed at supporting local health programs and food security (with awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 and one proactive grant offering up to $40,000 available). Applications are due by September 26th at noon and must be submitted online.  WZMQ 19
  • After months of bargaining, UPHS-Marquette techs reached a tentative contract agreement on September 3 that includes an 18.75% wage increase over four years & matching health insurance with RNs and improved terms for incentive shifts, and union members will vote on the agreement on September 11.  WZMQ 19
  • During Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, mental health specialists in Marquette work to reduce the stigma around suicide by teaching residents to recognize signs like loneliness and changes in sleep or appetite. A Walk for Hope event will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming—participants can join the walk at 11:00 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UP Health System Marquette is expanding its trauma surgery services today by launching UPHS Marquette Surgical Associates to bring together surgical expertise for better patient care. Peter Camilli said the new practice integrates trauma and breast surgery consultative care, and more services are expected to be added soon — enhancing access across the region.  Upper Michigan's Source
