COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Foundation of Marquette County celebrated its 37th anniversary on Wednesday at Northern Michigan University’s Northern Center—marking a milestone—by awarding $17.2M in grants and scholarships, with $3M benefiting 115 nonprofits last year. The foundation also presented Catalyst Awards—recognizing leaders in business, organization, youth, and individual categories—to honor those making lasting change in the community.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette’s Peter White Public Library opened a strategic planning survey yesterday to gather community feedback on its services, sustainability and expertise. Residents can complete the 10 to 15-minute survey online or with paper copies at the circulation desk as it closes on Saturday, October 11th — input will guide future library decisions.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Love Marq Church will host a candlelight violin concert on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.—musician Christopher Vuk of Blue Violin will perform reimagined rock hits by Queen, Led Zeppelin and Metallica. Tickets are available online for those eager to enjoy the event.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With classes back in session, Marquette City Police remind drivers to watch for students and slow down when school bus yellow lights flash—drivers should stop at least 20 feet from buses to avoid a violation under Michigan law.  WZMQ 19
  • Construction workers rallied in Negaunee on Wednesday morning to urge lawmakers to pass sustainable road funding, warning that failing to secure funds could cost 10,000 jobs. Marquette Mayor Hanley said her city needs more help for its many road projects because the current population-based formula does not cover the high use by visitors—lawmakers must agree on a unified budget by October 1.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • UPHP Clinical Coordinator Renee Anderton said on September 3rd that the annual flu shot is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older to help build immunity and protect vulnerable groups. She discussed the 'What's Your Why?' campaign during Mark and Walt in the Morning—urging listeners to contact their Primary Care Provider if they had questions.  Sunny 101.9
  • School administrators continue to offer free breakfast and lunch for students through September while waiting for Michigan lawmakers to decide if the program will continue after Oct. 1; dietician Tammy Licar of Aspirus Health said balanced meals—grains, fruit, vegetables, and protein—help kids focus in class.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Home Builders Association of the U.P. now offers health insurance for its members, with options including major medical, dental, vision, holistic and supplemental coverage such as life and critical illness. CEO Sarah Foster said the rates are 20-30% lower than marketplace prices and the plan is available for groups and individuals—helping members save money.  Upper Michigan's Source

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A downtown housing project at 401 West Washington received city brownfield redevelopment approval this summer and is now under state review. Developers plan to raze most of the condemned building to build a three-story mixed-use structure with two retail spaces and 11 apartments—nine of which will be affordable—and construction may begin next year.  WZMQ 19
