COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 50th Marquette Kennel Club dog show is underway this weekend with over 350 dogs, including Yanni, competing in different events—handlers and owners come from many states and countries to participate. The event focuses on friendly competition and showcases a variety of breeds and training skills.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Member registration is open for fall programming at the David and Thu Brulé YMCA of Marquette County, offering gymnastics, homeschool gymnastics, a mix-it-up sports class for kids ages three to six, Family Flow yoga, Fit club and swim lessons. The first session will start the week of Sept 15, and non-members will be able to register on Monday — ensuring a smooth schedule for the upcoming season.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette food pantries are stocked and ready to serve students, families and other residents as the school year begins. St. Vincent De Paul and the Salvation Army reported serving hundreds of people each month—a 20% increase—and ask donors to call for needed food items.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • A Marquette startup Syncurrent was named one of the inaugural AI 50 award winners by the Center for Public Sector AI—its AI platform quickly helps local and tribal governments find funding opportunities. The company serves about 160 governments and will expand its work while remaining in Marquette.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, a new version of Geoff and Jon's Record Show and Sale takes place at Blackrocks Brewery on 3rd Street and runs from noon until 11:00 p.m.—the event is part of the Endless Summer Festival that features thousands of vinyl records, CDs and cassettes along with music, art, food and beer.  Sunny 101.9
  • Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will host its annual Wildcat Theatre Follies next week on campus with freshmen and sophomores performing songs, scenes, monologues and dance pieces at the Panowski Black Box Theatre from September 4th to 6th. An extra sensory-friendly matinee is scheduled on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Sunny 101.9
  • A new exhibit opened at Lake Effect Community Arts on South Cedar Street on Friday, August 29. The show—featuring printmaking and ceramics from nine local artists—is free to view until September 28.  WZMQ 19
  • The state House passed a budget that stops funding for creative programs and cuts over five billion dollars from arts support, ending grants from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. Lawmakers must agree on a new budget by October 1st (to stop a shutdown) as Upper Peninsula groups say the cuts will hurt jobs (and local arts programs).  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Debra Hautala Wahlberg was first diagnosed with cancer at age fifteen and has faced more than eight diagnoses since then. She continues to fight with joy and support from her husband and community and wrote a book—Living in Triumph: Victory over Fear—about her battle.  Upper Michigan's Source
