COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Marquette Women’s Center nears the end of its month-long Rocket Mortgage fundraising challenge and will accept donations until 4:59 p.m. The center has raised over $26,000 and is in third place — the first prize earns an extra $25,000, second earns $15,000, third earns $10,000, fourth earns $7,500, and fifth earns $5,000.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Make It Marquette gathered input from local business leaders at a virtual forum on Thursday afternoon—guests used a chart to show ways Marquette can be more inclusive, and this feedback will guide the campaign’s next steps.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The new exhibit 'Murmurations' opened at the DeVos Art Gallery on NMU’s campus, showcasing artworks by artists from an Italy residency — the show runs until Nov. 1 with accompanying performances and events.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU student Trevor Forsythe from Dryden died on Aug. 21 due to diabetes complications while he studied multimedia production and worked as a broadcast director at WZMQ. The university said it will lower the flag later this semester — a tribute chosen by his family — to honor his memory.  The Mining Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • Upper Peninsula State Bank’s CEO David Williams received the Best of Community Banking Award 2025 from Community Bankers of Michigan and will be honored at the CBM Annual Convention & Expo in Traverse City starting Sept. 10 — the award recognizes his long commitment to community service in the banking sector.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette city officials are finalizing a $24.8 million budget for fiscal year 2026 that will fund current services and allocate $1.4 million for infrastructure maintenance. The proposal avoids raising property or income taxes by increasing water and sewer fees by $5.62 per month and must be approved by September 30 with public office hours on September 10.  Upper Michigan's Source
