COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hope Church in Marquette organized a drive to collect school supplies—pencils, crayons, notebooks, and backpacks—for local families as school begins across the U.P., with items available on a first-come, first-served basis.  WZMQ 19
  • A trading and collectible card show will run today from 11:00am to 5:00pm at River Rock Lanes & Banquet Center at the Country Village in Ishpeming. The free event features a mix of sports cards and trading card games and still welcomes vendor sign-ups.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Choral Society will launch its Fall 2025 season next week with rehearsals starting Monday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Choral Room at the Thomas Fine Arts Building on Northern Michigan University's campus—no audition is required—while membership sign-up will also be available on September 8 and September 15.  Sunny 101.9
  • Today, Blues on the Bay returns for its 5th year at Thunder Bay Inn with Jupiter Vinyl opening the day at 1 p.m. and Laura Rain & the Caesars closing the night, and the event honors the Marquette Area Blues Society's 20 years and Earl and Nancy Bevins' 75th wedding anniversary.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Superior Watershed Partnership is using a solar-powered robot called BeBot to clean Lake Superior beaches as it moves from Petoskey to coastal spots in the Upper Peninsula. The robot collects debris—like cigarette butts, bottle caps, and candy wrappers—and sends data to help fight plastic pollution in the Great Lakes.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.P. Health System-Marquette earned a three-year computed tomography accreditation from the American College of Radiology—meeting national standards for image quality and patient safety. CEO Tonya Darner said the reaccreditation reflects the team's dedication and expertise in providing quality imaging services.  The Mining Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marquette Township Board approved a 10-year tax increment finance proposal to fund a new housing project that will add 48 units over the next two years—Township Supervisor Lyn Durant said the plan pauses regular tax collections on the development and now awaits county-level approval.  Upper Michigan's Source
