- ➤ Robert Mercure is promoting biking on two routes that start at the Recreation Area on Silver Creek Road in Chocolay Township. The 10-mile Youth Challenge rides to Lions Field and back and the 24-mile Chocolay Challenge rides to Lakenenland on rough gravel — both routes aim to get more people out on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail. - ➤ At a Community Action Alger-Marquette meeting, CAAM Executive Director Michelle LaJoie said she will have a solution for the future of Meals on Wheels within three weeks and will present it at the board meeting on September 25. City Director Jon Swenson stressed that stable meal service is vital for seniors while community members explore ideas like a membership fee to fund the program — ensuring basic services continue. - ➤ The NMU cold case program solved a 39-year-old case from 1986 using forensic investigative genetic genealogy to clear suspects and help local law enforcement by digitizing old records — it started in 2022 and now reviews two cases each semester. The Mining Journal

- ➤ A vinyl record show will be held from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Blackrocks Brewery in Marquette. - ➤ Yesterday, the Marquette Symphony Orchestra Summer Strings group opened HarborFest with a night of Summer Blues music, and Marquette Rockestra performed next at the festival. - ➤ Sixty teachers from Marquette Alger and NMU gathered at NMU’s campus for a four-day Institute of Multisensory Education training program—this course taught methods like vowel exercises and world breakdown techniques to help all learners. - ➤ The NMU Marching Band—with 141 members and Director Steve Riley in his second year—began its season yesterday with intense week-long band camp that focuses on a new pregame drill and evolving formations. - ➤ Dr. Frank Farbod of the Facial Surgery Institute in Marquette has been appointed to serve on the national Committee on Rules & Procedure for the House of Delegates of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and is one of only 15 surgeons nationwide chosen for the National Committee on Healthcare Policy—recognizing his longstanding leadership in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is finishing his term as immediate past president of the Michigan Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons this year and has treated patients from across the Upper Peninsula.
