Stormy Kromer has launched a collegiate collection of wool caps today made in Ironwood with custom embroidery for 18 Midwestern universities.

The caps feature licensed logos from schools in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota — and will be available online.

The Upper Peninsula State Fair kicked off today — local organizers expect a full schedule of events for residents to enjoy.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is halfway through a $5 million grant project to remove 27 stream barriers including 16 dams — over 140 miles of streams have been reconnected so far.

The work will continue until January when nearly 200 upstream miles of rivers will be restored for better fish passage and public safety.

Marquette announced that the Cliffs Dow remediation project is open for bids with proposals due by 9 a.m. on Aug.

20 — the City Commission will choose a contractor on Sept. 8, who will start work within 10 days and complete the project by Dec. 31, 2026.

The Marquette City Commission approved two measures for the Downtown Development Authority on Monday (one extending the Tax Increment Financing plan to 2054 from 2036 and one establishing a revenue sharing plan that gives the city 5% of gross TIF revenue through 2054 in five-year increments). DDA Executive Director Tara Laase-McKinney said the decision will support larger projects such as improvements on Baraga Avenue, Third Street, and reconfigurations at Marquette Commons.

The US Army will conduct military training exercises this week in Marquette and Keweenaw Counties — the exercises include air mobility operations and ground-based close-quarter battle training to simulate terrain conditions with safety measures in place and will end on Sunday, Aug. 17.
