COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feeding America West Michigan held three drive-thru food pantry events on Wednesday at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique, Ontonagon Village Fire Hall in Ontonagon, and Munising Wesleyan Church in Alger County, and will host three more events today at North Iron Church in Ishpeming, Norway Community Food Pantry in Dickinson, and Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn—families are asked to remain in their vehicles during pick-up—.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette County YMCA offers its 'Pay the Day' joining fee special in August so that new members pay a fee equal to the day they sign up—if you join on Aug. 6, your fee will be $6. Members can enroll in person at the Marquette and Negaunee locations or online using the code 'YMCA4ALL.'  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette police held a community picnic on Wednesday outside the station with free hot dogs, burgers (and baked beans) available to neighbors. Chief Ryan Grim said the annual event lets locals connect with law enforcement in a friendly setting.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Harbor Rotary will host HarborFest from August 21st through August 23rd at Mattson Lower Harbor Park. The event will feature live music, food and a fully-stocked *beer and wine* tent to raise funds for local programs.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association local chapter 35-1 will hold their 11th Annual Jacobetti Ride for veterans this Saturday at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette – the ride starts at noon from American Legion Post #349 in Little Lake following a breakfast from 9:00 to 11:00 and continues with food, a raffle and an official flag retirement ceremony at dusk –.  Sunny 101.9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Marquette cannabis shop will close on August 22 as it will not renew its lease and will honor all loyalty points at other RIZE locations. The store will host a Thank You Marquette event until closing—inviting customers to celebrate its four years of service together.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Negaunee approved a 10-year renewal and expansion of the school sinking fund by a vote of 1,005 to 627 to raise 2.45 mills annually for maintenance, security upgrades, technology improvements, and student transportation. The measure takes effect in 2027 and runs through 2036 + overall turnout was just under 23 percent in this off-year election.  WZMQ 19
  • Yesterday, Innovate Marquette hosted an educational tour of its Protolab—a 3,000 square foot space with 3-D printing and laser-cutting machines—and explained how community members can apply to use its services and learn about recycling leftover filaments into new projects.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Marquette County Commissioners approved a new administrator contract naming Duane DuRay, formerly manager of Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport, as the administrator while David Erhart will serve as interim airport manager until a final decision is made.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan health experts report tobacco trends remain a concern as a new app—My Life, My Quit—lets teens aged 13 to 17 make personalized quit plans with real-time coach support to help resist peer pressure. Experts also warn that a sharp rise in nicotine pouch poisonings in young children emphasizes the need for families to secure these products and discuss safety at home.  Upper Michigan's Source
