COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette Women’s Center was chosen as one of hundreds of nonprofits to join Rocket Mortgage’s nationwide Rocket Community Challenge to raise funds for survivors of domestic and sexual violence+ the challenge offers prize donations up to $25,000. The center will have a donation booth with QR codes at the Classic Cars and Vintage Bikes Show on Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.+ the fundraiser ends on Aug. 29.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Lake Superior Community Partnership is hosting a series of events this month to help local businesses network and promote their services in Marquette County. The events include a Business After Hours at Ore Dock Brewing Company on August 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—a NMU Fall Fest on August 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—and a Partner Engagement Grill & Chill in Negaunee on August 27 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • MSU U.P. Extension Director James DeDecker said that the native flint corn study at MSU’s South Farm revives traditional crops and tests early-maturing varieties before frost. Researchers are partnering with the College of Menominee Nation to share 30 corn types with Indigenous communities—helping them restore cultural food practices.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The proposed 'Invest in MI Kids' ballot initiative will add a 5% tax on income over $500K for single filers and over $1M for couples — a measure expected to raise $1.7B each year to fund public school improvements. Supporters say the funds will cut class sizes, retain teachers, and boost career education while volunteers begin collecting signatures across Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette-Alger RESA introduced its new Future Educators CTE program to help local students pursue teaching careers — Director Erich Ziegler detailed the program and enrollment process on Mark and Walt on August 1.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette City Clerk Kyle Whitney said the city consolidated its seven precincts into four after a 2023 law allowed eligible areas to merge — the change saved costs, simplified election logistics, and did not limit voting rights. Delta County officials also discussed consolidation, with Wells Township planning to combine its two precincts into one polling location in an upcoming election.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette City Commission formed an e-bike task force to address safety concerns on the Lakeshore multi-use path after local riders raised issues. The group met tonight to organize plans for public input and will offer recommendations by December 21—currently only class 1 e-bikes are allowed on the path.  WZMQ 19

  • On August 5, 2025, Upper Peninsula Health Group launched the Know Where To Go — Appropriate Emergency Room Use Campaign to guide residents to proper care settings and protect emergency services.
