  • Today, Kognisjon Bryggeri on North Third Street debuts a new cherry wheat ale called 'George’s Superior Sunset' from 6-9 p.m.—a portion of each pint will benefit the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter while celebrating a local dog named George who loves sunsets.  Sunny 101.9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man died after his motorcycle crashed near Walmart in Marquette Township at 5:30 a.m. Thursday—traffic slowed near the US 41/County Road HQ roundabout before lanes reopened by 7:30 a.m. while Michigan State Police led an investigation.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Lake Superior Community Partnership is promoting its West End Business Passport program that features 13 local businesses and offers a chance to win a $250 Love on Local gift card when visitors go to 10 or more of them. ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition shows that minimum wage workers in Marquette may have to work extra jobs to pay the fair market rent of $1,054 for a two-bedroom apartment. Local leaders such as Randy Soucy are working with housing partners to create more affordable options—aimed at reducing the risk of homelessness.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Michigan State Police hosted its second annual Basketball Cop event in Marquette (bringing together officers and residents with music, games, food, raffles, and free refreshments). The event is part of a statewide initiative (aiming to rebuild community ties after COVID) that encourages open community engagement.  WZMQ 19
  • State lawmakers heard testimony on Wednesday about a $50 million infrastructure grant for the Copperwood Mine near Wakefield Township; supporters claimed the project would drive rural growth while critics warned it could harm wetlands and Lake Superior’s watershed. Budget talks remain unresolved, leaving local planning in limbo (22 local units of government have backed the project).  WZMQ 19
  • On Wednesday, a state subcommittee reviewed a $3 million grant to improve Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport and lower air travel rates, Marquette County Board of Commissioners Chair Joseph Derocha said — noting the airport does not get federal funding.
