COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wings Over Marquette air show is set for Saturday and Sunday at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport. Brenda Kerfoot announced that visitors will have the chance to ride historic aircraft—such as a WWII B-25 Bomber and a Vietnam War Huey Helicopter—during the all-day activities.  Sunny 101.9
  • Riders left Houghton Tuesday morning on the 10-day Tour Da Yoop, Eh to raise funds for U.P. Lions Serve to help families facing cancer, and by Tuesday afternoon $17,000 had been raised of the $150,000 goal. The 73 participants, including a couple riding for the second time and a father-daughter duo on a two-seater bike, will ride through the Keweenaw and head to Marquette tomorrow + finish in Manistique on Saturday.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • AMVETS Post 122 in Ishpeming hosted a picnic on Tuesday at the AMVETS campground on Lake Unky—residents from the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans enjoyed hot dogs, brats, salads, desserts, live music, bingo, and time by the lake.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care will host a free pet portrait event on Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.—a professional photographer will capture photos of residents with their pets while donations for UPAWS are collected and a photo contest is scheduled for August.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday that 63 small businesses statewide received $1.49 million in grants through the Match on Main program—six of which are in our Upper Peninsula and each received a $25,000 boost to strengthen their downtown areas.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over the summer, students with disabilities learned how to shop, mail letters, and order food at restaurants in the FUNctional Skills program hosted by UP Children’s Therapy. They practiced these skills—celebrated with a family party—and the group plans to offer the program again each year.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Champion Township proposes three bond renewals on August 5 — for its operating millage of 5.00, EMS millage of 1.00, and road fund millage of 2.00—to keep funding current services without tax increases. The township will hold voting at the new Champion Township Office at 1071 US-41 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  WZMQ 19
