  • Lakeshore Bike is hosting its second week-long e-bike demo in Marquette until Saturday that offers free rides for up to four hours and help on how e-bikes work+ the event also includes discounts on e-bike sales and encourages a leisurely spin around town.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Northern Michigan University will host its first BIPOC Outdoors Summit and Rest Retreat next week with the summit held at Wahtera Pavilion from August 4 to 5 and a retreat at Raging River Campground from August 6 to 8. The event features keynote speakers and nature-based activities for outdoor professionals—ticket prices are $165 for the summit and $300 for the retreat.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The U.P. Home Health and Hospice Center rededicated its Hospice Serenity Garden near Presque Isle Park on Monday to offer a quiet spot for all who need a place to think. The center will plant trees on the property over the next year and invites volunteers as caretaker Brian Swanson and Angela Ciampaglia keep the garden well maintained.  WZMQ 19

  • On July 28th, 2024, Mary Myers of the Lake Superior Community Partnership spoke on Mark & Walt in the Morning about business retention in Marquette County. She said the group plans to meet annually with local businesses to learn about their challenges and successes and to provide support through grants and networking.  Sunny 101.9
  • Laurium Manor Inn in Laurium is competing in Newsweek magazine’s Best Historical B&B contest as the only U.P. nominee. The nearly 120-year-old inn—started as a bed and breakfast in 1989 with 45 rooms—will try to win first place when voting closes on August 14.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday at the Ojibwe Recreation Area in Baraga, the 47th annual powwow brought together dancers, singers and food vendors offering traditional foods such as wild rice and fry bread—Powwow Chair Christine Awonohopay said it was one of the largest powwows in Michigan.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northern Strike NS25-2 will take place from August 2 to 16 across Michigan, with training at K.I. Sawyer Airfield in Marquette and more than 7,500 participants from across the country and abroad. The exercise is expected to boost local economic activity by generating about $38 million annually and will cause increased traffic on August 2 and August 16.  WZMQ 19
