COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Marquette will host the Blueberry Festival on July 25, marking 26 years with around 8,000 visitors expected and running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.—planned street closures from West Washington to West Baraga will direct traffic via Baraga Avenue, Third Street, and Bluff Street. Vendors from across the region will supply fresh blueberries to offset local harvest delays—organizers advise pet owners to keep animals safe during the event.  WZMQ 19
  • Feeding America West Michigan's mobile food pantry will distribute food at noon Eastern time Wednesday outside Building 604 at the corner of Avenue C and Third Street in KI Sawyer.   • Little Bellas is a noncompetitive organization for girls ages 7 to 18 in Marquette County—program lead Elizabeth Sabin said there are three spots left for this season.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Ishpeming cookie store Doozers hired two summer employees through the Michigan Rehabilitation Services Job Help program to work on cookie tasks like scooping dough and decorating cookies. Co-owner Claire Morgan-Heredia said the program builds skill and confidence—preparing workers for future job opportunities while decorated cookies will be featured at Marquette’s Blueberry Festival Friday.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Camp Infinity is back at NMU this week (teaching computer science and coding to fifth and sixth grade girls) in a weeklong camp with hands-on sessions like programming robots and designing websites. Organizer Loretta Yakima said the camp will help girls learn new skills (boosting interest in tech jobs) and will continue in several locations across the state this summer.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 23, Marquette County clerks tested voting machines using sample ballots to meet state rules—confirming each machine’s accuracy—and inviting voters to attend public tests ahead of upcoming elections.  WZMQ 19
  • Dr. Nerita Hughes, president of Bay de Noc Community College and JG Consulting, was appointed to the Michigan Workforce Development Board by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on July 10 to represent the Upper Peninsula. Her first board meeting is set for Sept 22—she will work to improve workforce development for community colleges across the state.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Michigan State Police Negaunee Regional Dispatch Center held a first responder blood drive where anyone could donate at the U.P. Health System Regional Blood Center in Marquette — aiming to address a critical need for all blood types. Emergency dispatcher Kristi Carello organized the event and said each donation helps save lives — a measure to support local patients and responders.  Upper Michigan's Source
