  • On Wednesday, Marquette Kids Club set up a lemonade stand on Front St. and Ridge St. to raise funds for Ainsley’s HALO — a nonprofit that helps local student-athletes and hospitals fighting childhood cancer in honor of Ainsley Kargela, and volunteers said the event showed the community's generous spirit while giving kids a look at the service industry.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Senior Center celebrated its 60th anniversary on Friday with a party at the Marquette Commons that featured free food, resource tables, live music and dance lessons—organizers and Mayor Jessica Hanley noted nearly 100 people attended and praised the strong local support for seniors.  WZMQ 19
  • Lake Superior Community Partnership hosted a breakfast meeting at the Marquette Holiday Inn on Friday to join nonprofits and local businesses—efforts that aim to keep the county strong as federal and state support shifts. CRIME NEWS

  • A Marquette police officer was injured in a foot pursuit Friday morning after a 40-year-old suspect from Ishpeming, armed with a baseball bat, robbed merchandise at Midjim Convenience Store and punched an officer when he ran away— the suspect was arrested and faces multiple charges.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival began Friday night in Marquette—featuring live music, workshops, crafts, vendors and a teen area—and continues today with nearly 1,000 volunteers supporting headliner Tony Trischka’s Earl Jam.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum is hosting a free Super Science Fest today from 1-3 p.m.—guests from the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum will lead interactive science activities for local families.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan State Housing Development Authority released its new Get Housing Ready guide to help local governments update outdated zoning rules and address the state’s housing shortage—especially in the Upper Peninsula where the shortage is more acute. The guide builds on a previous program that provided $8.5 million in incentives and is now available for download.  WZMQ 19
  • Childcare provider Andrea Richard had her group child care home license suspended at 6 p.m. last Wednesday after a July 15 investigation by the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential’s Child Care Licensing Bureau found she failed to supervise children properly. The investigation found that children aged six and nine were seen walking unsupervised along M-28 near Wintergreen Trail, and Richard was told she could no longer accept or care for children.  The Mining Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marquette’s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority discussed a plan for a project at 401 W. Washington St. on Wednesday, where a developer will build nine new housing units with one-bedroom units starting near $1,600 per month plus two commercial spaces, an underground parking garage, and two nonattainable residential units. The board approved the Brownfield plan and will loan about $1.1 million to be repaid through captured tax increases over 20 years while the City Commission will schedule a public hearing to review the proposal.  The Mining Journal
