- ➤ UPAWS is providing free pet food for dogs, cats and small critters to help Marquette County pet owners facing financial hardship at its food bank. Guests can obtain supplies at the shelter Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.+ a few free metal crates are also available. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ New stairs at Presque Isle Park have been completed this week to provide a safer way from the island to the break wall. Community members—led by Margaret Brumm who worked on the project for two and a half years—joined local officials to finish the renovation. WZMQ 19
- ➤ The Gwinn Lions Club will host the 2nd annual Sawyer Summer Sizzle this Saturday at 11 a.m. at the ballpark on Scorpion Rd where families will enjoy bounce houses, a batting cage, games, live music, a foam pit, and over 25 vendors selling baked goods and skin care products—donations will be accepted to support future events. - ➤ The Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee will host its 31st annual Garden Tour next Thursday in Marquette. The self-guided tour will visit seven gardens with a refreshment stop at Blackrocks Brewery — tickets cost $15 and are sold at local flower shops. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Music on Third returned to downtown Marquette last Thursday with 17 bands performing at more than a dozen spots + organizers extended the hours from 6 to 9 p.m. to give visitors more time to see each act, and the event will continue every third Thursday through September. - ➤ Crews are setting up Tourist Park for the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival, which begins at 7 p.m. today and runs until Sunday night—featuring performances by Tony Trischka, WhoDat Brass and Scottish band Breabach while offering tents for dancing and crafts. Upper Michigan's Source
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential suspended the license of Andrea Richard, a Marquette child care provider at 371 West Wright Place, after an investigation found she failed to supervise children and ensure their safety— the action took effect at 6:00 p.m. on July 16, and she is now barred from operating a child care home at any location. State officials said the step was taken to protect the welfare of the children under her care. WZMQ 19

- ➤ The 35th annual Republic Fishing Derby takes place this weekend along the Michigamme River in Republic with pre-registration held Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and fishing scheduled for Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event includes a Friday parade at 7 p.m. — running until 11 p.m., a Saturday performance by Diversion with a fireworks display, and a Sunday duck race sponsored by the Republic Fire Department with entry fees at $30 for adults and $10 for kids.
