COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sands Speedway held a race Sunday in Sands Township to raise funds for Cancer Care of Marquette County that provided about $100,000 to help 80 people pay for treatment—covering travel and medical bills. Track promoter Tina Brandel said the event was personal for her family after her brother was recently put on hospice care.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Blueberry Dance Festival will be held at Kaufman Auditorium on July 28 to July 29 and will feature free drop-in dance classes on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a contemporary master class on Monday from 6 to 8:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, jazz and musical theater master classes from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and noon to 2:30 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. showcase, with competition registration available at Second Skin Shop (1034 N. 3rd St.). The Graveraet High School Class of 1960 will hold its 65th reunion on Sunday, July 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 44 (700 W. Bluff St.), where snacks and soft drinks will be served.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Negaunee City Band will host a Christmas in July free concert on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street & ask attendees to bring food donations for local pantries.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • A weekend race called Run the Keweenaw drew runners to Copper Harbor where they ran a 25k (15.5 miles with 1,300 ft of elevation gain) course up Brockway Mountain and to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Michigan Tech graduate Zacharias Mills joined racers from downstate and finished third, saying he had painful legs and feet after the race.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Sunday, 15 teams competed in the 67th Annual International Frisbee Tournament in Hancock, with athletes coming from Lower Michigan and Wisconsin to play guts frisbee. Team captains like Tyler Turcotte and William Blau explained the sport’s mix of tough play and friendly competition — a tradition that includes local legend Scott Stokely.  Upper Michigan's Source
