Terry Millimaki’s ashes were returned home on Sunday after a 2,000-mile ride by the Arizona Patriot Guard Riders.
His family held a ceremony at the American Legion Post 44 to honor his lifelong connection to Ishpeming.
🎭 Culture
On Sunday, a talk at the Keweenaw National Historic Park in Calumet shed light on UP WWI history when speakers explained how the 339th Infantry Division, known as the Polar Bears (including local Yoopers), fought in harsh Russian winters and stayed overseas until July 1919.
🎓 Education
Northern Michigan University received state funding from Michigan’s 2027 budget for a $22.98M business center to house its College of Business, adding a 30,000 sqft facility to the existing Hedgcock Building on campus; Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is expected to sign the budget soon, allowing construction plans to move forward.
🌲 Environment
The National Weather Service said the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin will see extreme heat with highs in the upper 90s today and Tuesday while rainfall stays below normal, and thunderstorms could form this weekend.

Central U.P. Regional Housing Partnership urges Upper Peninsula residents, business owners, and leaders to complete a statewide housing survey to shape Michigan's next Statewide Housing Plan.
The survey builds on May 6 engagement efforts and will guide housing policy and funding priorities.

Northern Michigan University's women's cross country team is gearing up to repeat its NCAA appearance after a record-setting season last fall.
The Wildcats will kick off with an exhibition meet on Friday, Aug. 21 near Superior Dome and compete in additional events through Nov. 21.
