COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ishpeming hosts the 23rd annual Buzz the Gut car show and parade on Aug. 9 with 'Show and Shine' from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum parking lot where the Ishpeming VFW will serve food. After the show, vehicles will cruise through Ishpeming and Negaunee — returning to the Ishpeming Elks Lodge for a dance, refreshments, and music by Swampberry Moonshine.  The Mining Journal
  • The Skandia Lions Club will host its 45th annual Community Days today with a parade at 11 a.m.—the Skandia West Branch Fire Department will run a cookout as the event features raffles, vendor booths and games for families. All funds raised will benefit local charities.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County Hockey Night returns this fall on September 13th at Berry Events Center when the Detroit Red Wings Alumni team will battle Yoopers United in a United Way fundraiser — the event will also include a Sled Hockey exhibition, Chuck-A-Puck, and chances to win hockey swag, as explained by United Way Executive Director Andrew Rickauer.  Sunny 101.9
  • The 77th annual Copper Country Strawberry Festival began Friday in Chassell and runs through today with over 70 craft vendors, games, a parade for kids, and fundraising by the local Lions Club. Strawberry supplies are limited as 40 flats sold out within two hours—more will arrive tomorrow, with farmers crediting the unique soil and cool climate for the berries’ sweetness.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marquette officials closed Tourist Park beach because elevated levels of E. coli were found—city staff are collecting water samples daily and will reopen the beach when the water meets state standards.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 14, the City of Marquette said visitor traffic at Presque Isle Park will slow due to a sewer and water installation for the new bandshell—officials said work will be completed by July 25—while the park remains open.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Friday morning, the Marquette City Commission met at the Presque Isle Pavilion to discuss a Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2026-28 that builds on a community master plan completed last year (in 2024). City Manager Karen Kovacs said the plan will focus on six areas including Governmental Excellence and Economic Development and that its outcomes will be finalized before the end of the fiscal year (with public input expected in 2026).  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Incoming kindergarteners in Marquette County will get free hearing, vision and dental screenings on July 21—22 at Birchview Elementary in Ishpeming provided by the Marquette County Health Department and funded by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services; the program also covers homeschool students to meet school requirements.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is warning residents about carfentanil — a synthetic opioid 10,000 times stronger than morphine — as it reemerges in the unregulated drug supply and is linked to 11 overdose deaths from January through June; officials advise carrying naloxone to quickly reverse overdoses.  The Mining Journal
