BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vernors is releasing a limited edition summer flavor called the Vernors Boston Cooler that blends sweet ginger with creamy vanilla to evoke the classic Boston Cooler float experience—served with vanilla ice cream. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Regional History Center will resume historic bus tours next week so residents can explore downtown, historic homes, the lakefront and NMU campus—one tour is already sold out. Tickets cost $25 and more rides are expected to sell fast.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette will host the free Music on Third event next week on July 17 with longer hours and increased pay for musicians; the event runs every third Thursday through September from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. and features performances at more than a dozen locations on Third Street—bringing fresh tunes to the downtown area.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marquette Mountain is hosting a four-week summer youth program for kids ages 6-12 that runs one day a week from noon until 4 p.m. Adventure Manager Neil Flavin says the program—called Mountaineer—will teach outdoor skills and foster a long-lasting care for nature, with more sessions planned.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Peter White Public Library is halfway through its summer reading program and offers events for kids, including an interactive puppet show next Thursday featuring a robot named Wimee—an art show on July 28 will display local art while children can still sign up to earn free books for reading.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Whitefish in Lakes Michigan and Huron dropped from over five million pounds to about 500,000 pounds over 30 years, and DNR experts say this decline may hurt the local economy and culture. They noted that Quagga mussels hurt the fish food chain (a key part of the issue) and the commission will vote on year-round coyote hunting on Aug. 14.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Callie Barr, a caregiver advocate and attorney from Cheboygan, announced her second campaign for Michigan's 1st Congressional District on July 10, challenging incumbent Rep. Jack Bergman and pledging to address rural issues like healthcare access and broadband shortages—she vowed to hold town halls and outreach events across northern Michigan to give local residents a stronger voice.  WZMQ 19
  • Raymond E. Carlson was named Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year and will be honored at the U.P. State Fair in August. The award ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. on Aug 14 in Escanaba—highlighting his long service with the American Legion.  The Mining Journal
