St. Vincent de Paul Marquette district began expanding its Presque Isle Avenue facility on Wednesday morning with a ($1.2 million) campaign and volunteer support, and it will keep services available during renovations set to finish in February.

The next phase will address improvements in Gwinn.

Marquette’s St. Vincent de Paul held a groundbreaking ceremony for planned facility renovations that will add a pantry area, improved financial aid office and conference room—funded by community donors.

Construction will begin in two weeks with work expected to finish early 2027.

Marquette Food Co-op announced on Monday that it will enforce its customer behavior policies amid an increase in panhandling, loitering, and misuse of its facilities.

The Co-op will install new signage, locked fences, and hire short-term security (with support from local police and community partners) to protect shoppers and staff.

Marquette Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2026-2027 season and celebrates 30 years of music with a free outdoor concert at 7:30 p.m. today at the new Peg Hirvonen Bandshell at Presque Isle Park (season tickets, sponsorship, and a cash raffle are available).

Marquette's Presque Isle Park, celebrated by late NMU professor John Anderton for its ancient rock formations, is now featured in Historic Marquette Bus Tours offered by the Marquette Regional History Center — tours run in July and August with tickets on sale.

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center has opened an exhibit called Munising in Black & White featuring 60 photographs by Mary Jayne Hallifax of Munising in the 1950s and 1960s.

It is open (12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday) until mid-October.

Blue Champagne, featuring Mary Lou Pesola, Bob Buchkoe and Wayne Finman, will perform at the Marquette Federated Women’s Clubhouse on Friday at 7 p.m. for the centennial celebration this summer + the free event accepts a free will offering for clubhouse upkeep while the band plays swing, jazz and pop tunes from the 20s to the 90s.

The Negaunee Public Library (Pioneer Days event) hosted Michigan authors today, where six local and regional writers signed books and met readers; Library Director Jessica Holman said the event shines a light on local literary talent.

Northern Michigan University Alumni Relations announced four award winners for the 2026 Alumni Awards, including Jenna Zdunek and Maureen McFadden from Marquette.

The honorees will be celebrated during Homecoming, scheduled for Sept. 18-19.
