COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norway residents are holding a benefit this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thirsty Whale Bar and Grill to aid the Gendron family after their house burned down; the family is seeking a rental home as they recover.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The UPAWS dog park reopened Monday after a grub infestation ruined the grass and forced a month-long closure—more than 25 volunteers helped restore the area so dog owners can once again use the fenced-in, year-round park. The park now looks better than ever as it welcomes returning visitors and new members of the community.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Tuesday, a C-47 visited Marquette Sawyer Airport ahead of the inaugural Wings Over Marquette Air Show (Aug. 2-3), where pilot Grant Schwartz will offer ride experiences in this historic aircraft.   • A Marquette clothing store called Fancy-free is reopening in a new Washington St. location where owner Greta Hillstrom offers curated resale items such as unique clothing, jewelry, and home goods. The store will hold its grand opening this Saturday at noon at 110 W. Washington St.—with live music playing until 3 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Symphony Orchestra is preparing for its free outdoor Summer POPS! concert — The Symphony Goes Wild, Wild West — in Marquette Commons with sponsors Eagle Mine and the Downtown Development Authority. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and will move to Friday if rain falls.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The state of Michigan received a $1.5 million grant from the Ballmer Group to develop a Community Transition Playbook that gives local communities tools to handle economic shocks like plant closures—local leaders from over 40 counties helped shape the plan, and a pilot will test it before a statewide rollout early next year.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Golden Apple Foundation inducted 52 students from Hancock, Dollar Bay, Newberry and Sault Ste. Marie into its second cohort of aspiring teachers at a ceremony at Michigan State University this week — the new scholars will receive mentorship and job placement support as they commit to five years teaching in schools where over 30% of students qualify for free or reduced lunches.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MSU U.P. Extension Center and Northern Michigan University started the third year of reduced tillage research at the MSU Extension farm in Chatham to compare conventional plowing with four less disruptive methods using tarps and crimping. Full Plate Farm owner Laura Brosius in Skandia said her farm produced more food because the new approach kept soil moisture and nutrients better—researchers collect hourly temperature, moisture, and greenhouse gas readings to guide UP organic farmers.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The City of Marquette buried a time capsule in Presque Isle Park Tuesday — filling it with pictures, newspaper clippings from the past 25 years and cans of beer from Black Rocks and Ore Dock Brewing Co. — that will remain unopened until 2050 to show future residents what life was like between 2000 and 2025.  Upper Michigan's Source
