🏘️ Community
Powell Township will host its 31st annual Fire on the Bay event this Saturday in Big Bay where the Marquette band Ramble Tamble will perform at the beach pavilion next to Burns Landing Historic Park and fireworks will light up after the show.
The township is collecting donations+community support to ensure the event continues each year.
The Marquette Junior Yacht Club held its first youth sailing lesson of the summer on Monday at Lower Harbor where young skippers learned about boat anatomy and water safety.
The six-week program will teach sailing basics and teamwork to help students enjoy the local waters safely.
LSCP will host its Breakfast and Business meeting at the Holiday Inn in Marquette on July 18 with a breakfast buffet at 7:30 a.m. and a panel discussion at 8:00 a.m., while registration costs are $25 for LSCP partners + $35 for non-partners and several local nonprofit leaders will speak.

A crash on M-28 closed eastbound and westbound lanes between US-41 and Riverside Road — emergency responders from Chocolay Township Police, Fire, and Michigan State Police are on scene — and no further details have been released, though officials say — additional updates will follow soon —.

The Lake Superior Theater begins its production of Mamma Mia today at Boat House Theaters at 7:30 p.m. and the musical uses Abba songs to tell the story of Sophia Sheridan and her mother Donna Sheridan.

Local officials say off-road vehicle use will increase around the Fourth of July and urge riders to follow safety rules.
Cpl. Mike Hearn of the Michigan DNR noted that 93% of 2023 fatalities could have been prevented when riders keep speeds low and wear helmets — a key reminder for both riders and supervising parents.
At today's board meeting, county commissioners voted to apply for a federal COPS grant to help pay for new deputies and patrol cars needed for full-time road patrol amid staffing shortages—officials also plan to reassign jail staff and hold public interviews for a new County Administrator on July 15.
