COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday the Mariucci Family Beacon House hosted its fourth annual Grill & Chill Fundraiser with a sold-out Night in Nashville that featured a grill master competition, bourbon tasting and live music by Tim Nichols, Deric Ruttan and Patrick Murphy. The event raised funds to support cancer and NICU patients and their families while continuing to provide over $100 million in rooms, meals and transportation.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County hosted its seventh annual Community Resource Fair at Lakeview Arena on Thursday, where over 70 organizations offered free services including transportation, dental work, and veteran support. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peter White Public Library in Marquette will host the 'Color your World' summer reading program for adults on Thursday, Aug. 7—participants can read books, pick up a bookmark listing the title and rating, and submit up to ten entries by the last day for a chance to win a prize.  The Mining Journal
  • The NMU Board of Trustees approved new tuition and fee rates on Thursday morning, setting the resident undergraduate tuition at $7,564 per semester—up $367—and raising graduate tuition by $36 per credit. The new rates, based on proposed state budgets, will take effect this fall and support planned investments in financial aid and academic resources.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UP teens attended Camp 911 in Munising where they learned what it takes to be a first responder by practicing traffic stops, first aid, and court procedures—this four-day program fostered interest in law enforcement careers and built strong community ties. Michigan State Police Cadet Emma Sweeney said the camp opened doors for students to explore future opportunities in policing.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority said it has seen more needles in the trash and some employees were hurt when needles caused a shutdown on the recycle floor. The authority advised residents to use its monthly household hazardous waste collection from May to October (3-7 p.m.) at the landfill or to schedule an appointment for safe disposal.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Thursday meeting, the CAAM Board discussed problems with funding for Meals on Wheels in Marquette and Alger Counties—raising concerns for older adults who depend on the service. The board also voted to re-elect two members and dismiss one and will resume its review of the program at its next meeting on July 24th.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • UP Health System—Marquette received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain—MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2025 after meeting high standards for heart attack treatment over 2023 and 2024. The award marks the hospital as one of only 323 nationwide for its commitment to guideline-based cardiac care.  Upper Michigan's Source
