  • Beacon House will host its 4th annual Grill & Chill fundraiser on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Night in Nashville theme—featuring a grill master competition, bourbon tasting, and celebrity appearances by Steve Mariucci and Tom Izzo to benefit cancer and NICU patients and families.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An Escanaba motorcyclist, Glenn Daniel Varney aged 58, lost control of his motorcycle on M-35 near the Marquette County Road 557 intersection at 4:30 p.m. Friday and struck a utility pole, and he was pronounced dead at the scene while Forsyth Township Police and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office began investigating.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday, kids painted the Lake Superior shoreline at the Maritime Museum’s Plein Air Workshop at the lighthouse as part of Art Week—organizers said it was Marquette’s final Art Week but planned to continue the event in the future.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette residents are invited to the unveiling of 'Now You See Us'—a new public art installation on June 26 at 2 p.m. on West Main Street near the old Delft Theatre building, which honors local neighbors and is part of a global participatory art movement.  The Mining Journal
  • Northern Michigan University’s Department of Theatre & Dance will stage 'Love Letters' at Forest Roberts Theatre featuring actors Amy Dolan-Malaney and Robert Ouellette in a play by A.R. Gurney that spans 50 years of correspondence between two longtime friends. Showtimes are set for 7:30 p.m. from Thursday, June26 through Saturday, June28—attendees can secure tickets at the box office.  Sunny 101.9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tilden Mine received a permit from EGLE to use 33 acres of wetlands for rock disposal and will also use 300 feet of nearby stream for extra capacity. The permit requires protection of 115 acres of wetland—an effort that has raised concerns about wildlife habitat in the area.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In May, the Marquette County Board raised commissioner salaries and paid them retroactively from Jan. 1, which broke two state laws—Board Chair Joe Derocha explained that the mistake happened when commissioners took on extra work after the county lost its administrator in March. The board is now working with legal counsel to recover the extra funds and fix the error.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County will interview three candidates for the administrator role after reopening applications when contract negotiations failed with the previous candidate—public interviews are set for July 15 as staff maintained operations during the vacancy.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, as heat and humidity continue across Upper Michigan, doctors and first responders advise residents to stay in the shade, wear sunscreen, and cool off in Lake Superior—MFD has not seen a major rise in heat-related calls—and they warn that elderly and athletes should take extra care.  Upper Michigan's Source
