COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday morning, Peter White Public Library distributed free meals to kids through the Gather 2 Grow program by Feeding America West Michigan; the program, which began on June 2, will run until the end of August to meet rising summer food needs—head of youth services Sarah Rehborg said the library provided almost double the meals compared to the school year.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Superior Watershed Partnership celebrated 25 years in Marquette on Friday at the Lake Superior Theater—where community members enjoyed food, drinks and an auction. Executive Director Carl Lindquist said he was proud of their efforts to protect the Great Lakes and planned to continue their work.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • DR3WPALOOZA, a three-day music festival in Republic that began three years ago as a birthday celebration for founder Drew Collister, is underway this weekend — featuring 18 live performances that help raise funds for Ainsley’s HALO.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • NMU is launching a new series of summer concerts at Reynolds Recital Hall on Tuesdays in June and July, featuring highly trained faculty musicians. The free concerts—beginning with classical guitar by Christopher Schoelen on June 24, with later events featuring trumpet, brass quintet, percussion and saxophone—will generally start at 5 p.m. except one at 4 p.m., with donations supporting the music department.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette will host its 10th and final Art Week beginning Monday as the event highlights stories inspired by a new cultural trail running from the Carp River to Presque Isle. A ribbon cutting for the trail will take place on Wednesday as the city shifts focus to its local arts and culture community.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The DNR urged boaters to clean their boats and trailers of mud, plants, or debris before launching to keep invasive species out of local waters + under state law, boaters must drain all water from their vessels after use. The department said these steps help protect the U.P.'s clean lakes.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital announced the appointment of Robert Mach as its new chief executive officer, effective Aug. 15. Mach (a former Holly resident and U.S. Marine Corps veteran) brings decades of healthcare leadership from CEO roles at Select Specialty Hospital and Borgess facilities.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette Care Clinic is hosting its annual Life Walk today at Mattson Lower Harbor Park at 10 a.m.—walkers will gather pledges to support the clinic’s operations and assist new and expecting parents as organizers aim to raise $30,000.  Upper Michigan's Source
