- ➤ Embers Credit Union employees cleared a section of the NTN trail last Thursday during their annual Light UP Communities Day and worked to improve trail safety for bikers. Mountain biker Nick Johnson said the crew cleared loose rocks + raked grass clippings and cut exposed roots to ready the trail for use. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Northern Michigan University kicked off its first week-long Juneteenth celebration at Lakeview Arena with live music, vendors and a keynote from political science professor Carter Wilson—aiming to honor freedom and culture. - ➤ Marquette Art Week will run from Monday, June 23 to Saturday, June 28 as the final annual art event hosted by the City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture. - ➤ Marquette Maritime Museum received just under $4,000 from the America250MI grant to build three interactive exhibits—one focused on shipwreck history that lets visitors click to learn about wreck details—and officials said the first exhibit will open by the end of summer. - ➤ Summer officially begins tonight at 10:42 p.m. with the solstice — marking the tilt's peak before days gradually shorten; local birdwatchers report trumpeter swans on the Dead River in north Marquette and a rare hawk near Rock River Road in Alger County. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Cleveland-Cliffs’ Tilden Mine in Tilden Township had its permit approved on June 11 to fill 32.5 acres of wetlands and 272 linear feet of stream with waste rock for a 20-year iron ore plan. EGLE said the permit (permit #WRP045322) requires preserving 114.9 acres of wetland (Green Creek Preservation Area) and will be closely monitored while some environmental groups remain worried about local waterways. - ➤ Karla Wagner, the founder of AxMITax, spoke Thursday evening at the Holiday Inn in Marquette about ending property taxes in Michigan—she said the loss will be made up with higher sales and state income taxes while collecting signatures from registered voters to put the petition on the ballot. - ➤ The Marquette County Board of Commissioners held their biweekly meeting Tuesday where they honored Lt. Errol Lukkarinen’s retirement after 29 years and approved actions for a 62.5 megawatt solar project in Republic Township, staffing changes on the Airport Advisory Committee, and efforts to resolve missing autopsy reports that delayed families. Commissioner Dana LaLonde also met with Congressman Jack Bergman via Zoom to discuss future Medicaid cuts—the board will hold a closed session on the county administrator search and plans a public forum, with the next meeting set for July 1 at the Henry A.
