- ➤ Trillium House announced three benefit events in Marquette County to raise funds and awareness for its programs. The first, the Dale Watson Pre-Party at Strega Nonna in Negaunee with the Flat Broke Blues Band, took place on June 18, while the Harley Owner’s Group Downtown Marquette Party is set for June 27 and a one-night show with Texas Troubador Dale Watson will be held on July 13. - ➤ St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette is fixing its old bell towers and choir loft with nearly $2.5 million from local donors to repair damage from freeze-thaw cycles. - ➤ On Wednesday, Feeding America West Michigan held mobile food pantry events at the Salvation Army in Escanaba and at the Berry Events Center parking lot on NMU campus to assist families in need, with volunteers starting food distribution at 10 a.m. in Escanaba and at noon in Marquette—attendees stayed in their vehicles during the drive-thru events. - ➤ UP Marine Corps veteran Tracy Tippett, known for her work with Marquette County Toys for Tots, was named Michigan Marine of the Year at the 85th annual Michigan Marine Corps League Summer Convention in Flint from June 6-8—she served as a heavy equipment mechanic from 1987 to 1992 and is only the second female to receive the honor. - ➤ Marquette officials and partners met Wednesday at the 78-acre former Cliffs-Dow site to review cleanup progress on a waterfront property once used for wood chemical manufacturing; city leaders plan to use the site for commercial purposes once the cleanup finishes in October (EPA Administrator Anne Vogel warned of inhalation risks) (EGLE Director Phil Roos noted strong returns from state investments).
