COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members at Fit Body Boot Camp in Escanaba and Marquette donated $5,000 to the U.P. Human Trafficking Task Force on Tuesday. Owner Sean Clements matched donations as part of a burpee fundraiser—doing one burpee for every dollar raised—to support efforts in combating human trafficking.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette will host a full slate of Fourth of July events as Freedom Fest takes place from noon to 10 p.m. on July 3—4 at Mattson Lower Harbor Park, offering ethnic foods, local favorites, and kid activities. Fireworks and a laser show are scheduled for dusk on July 3 with a sensory-friendly laser show on July 4, and a parade will begin at 2 p.m. on July 4 at McClellan Avenue and West Washington Street.  The Mining Journal
  • Up North Lodge in Gwinn will host a fundraiser on Sunday, June 22 for UPAWS starting at 3 p.m. with live music by Lost Cause from 4 to 7 p.m.—guests will enjoy food, raffles, and a 50/50 drawing with all proceeds supporting homeless animals.  WZMQ 19
  • Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care will host its 7th annual Antique and Classic Car Show on Saturday at 1 p.m. The event will feature at least 20 unique cars, free food and live music + donations will be collected for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s team.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is offering three free walking tours of NMU campus starting at 11 a.m. on June 20 so visitors can learn about the university's evolution over 125 years—covering its start in 1988 and later changes. The tours will also take place on July 11 and Aug 8, beginning at the Carillon Towers next to the University Center.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Northern Michigan University leads a week-long Juneteenth celebration in Marquette that started on Monday and will run through Friday with a drum workshop held Tuesday at Ore Dock Brewing Company, a dance workshop held today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a free festival set for tomorrow at Olson Arena, and a film night on Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.—these events mark 160 years since news of emancipation was first shared in Texas.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Construction has begun at Aspen Ridge Elementary in Ishpeming Township for a new gymnasium and two classrooms that will be completed by winter—adding vital space for both students and teachers. The project is funded by a 5.5 million dollars sinking fund that did not require extra taxes.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday evening, dozens of nurses and technologists rallied at Harlow Park in Marquette to demand fair contracts with Lifepoint Health after recent changes reduced their benefits, with red signs seen along West Washington Street. The nurses returned to bargaining Tuesday while MAST is set to meet June 23 — union leaders say the protests reflected concerns over staffing, working conditions and insurance issues — as talks continue.  The Mining Journal
  • Yesterday, The Living Well Chiropractic and Acupuncture held its ribbon cutting on West Washington Street and will host a free family event on June 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The practice (located at 1108 W Washington St.) is owned by Drs. Kevin and Brianne Levandoski and offers chiropractic care and acupuncture for children and women (helping with pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause).  WZMQ 19
