COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, over 4,000 protesters gathered along US-41 in Marquette to protest No Kings Day in an event organized by Lake Superior Region Indivisible—participants expressed hope and a strong voice for democratic action. Supporters in nearby communities such as Iron Mountain, St. Ignace and Sault St. Marie also joined similar protests.  WZMQ 19
  • TV6 News Director Andrew LaCombe is stepping down next month after four years and will take a new role as news director at WLUK-TV in Green Bay in July. He said he loved Upper Michigan and will miss his colleagues + the station will begin looking for his replacement.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Up North Lodge will host Party on the Patio—a free event that will raise funds for UPAWS this Sunday at 3 p.m.—featuring basket raffles, a 50/50 drawing, an outdoor bar and live music from Lost Cause.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A truck and a semi crashed in Negaunee—forcing traffic to be rerouted on US-41 and Croix Street for travelers heading east from Ishpeming—while emergency responders arrived and found no injuries.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westwood High School posted its honor roll showing students in grades 9 through 12 who earned all A’s and maintained a 3.0 GPA or better—this listing honors dozens of students for their hard work.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Karl Bohnak introduced a bill that would let Michigan join the Counseling Compact & allow licensed mental health counselors from other states to provide care, especially in rural areas like the Upper Peninsula, by expanding telehealth options and reducing wait times. He said the proposal will help residents avoid long drives for treatment by removing regulatory barriers.  WZMQ 19

  • UP Health System — Marquette has opened a second registration area to improve patient access and reduce walking distances. The new space was created from patient feedback and offers different parking options to help patients reach services faster.  Upper Michigan's Source
