COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, more than 40 vendors gathered on Washington Street for the first Wednesday Night Farmers Market of the season, drawing around 2,000 shoppers with fresh produce, crafts and baked goods. The market will run every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. until Aug. 27—Washington Street is closed from 3-9 p.m. on market nights—while local shops and eateries remain open.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The David & Thu Brulé YMCA of Marquette County will offer free meals to kids and teens as part of the USDA Summer Nutrition Program starting Tuesday, June 24 until Aug. 12. Marquette Area Public Schools will make the food & Jilbert’s Dairy will provide the milk with meals available in the YMCA lobby on Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. while the organization seeks volunteers to help with distribution.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Project Jade reached its fundraising goal in early June and is now planning a sensory-friendly toddler area at the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum—this new exhibit will help young neurodivergent visitors avoid overwhelming noise and bright lights.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Incredible Bank Hope Starts Here Challenge will be held this Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at Superior Dome in Marquette to raise funds for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center at NMU—featuring a half marathon, 5K and 10K runs, a 31K challenge, a leisure walk and events for kids, Dr. Rob Winn said.  Sunny 101.9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers from the Marquette County Conservation District cleaned up trash such as roof tiles and an old window frame on Wednesday afternoon in a forested area of Forsyth Township at the intersection of Engman Lake Road and Sporley Lake Road—officials plan more cleanup events in July and August.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Michigan DNR awarded $100K to Marquette County for a food forest at K.I. Sawyer that will add tree guilds along a non-motorized path linking a school and park. Construction begins this summer and planting will occur in fall and next spring (a project that aims to improve food access and education).  Upper Michigan's Source
