- ➤ On Friday, Lakeview Elementary held a dunk tank fundraiser on their last day of school to raise money for fourth grader Maddie Dodd, who is undergoing leukemia treatment in Ann Arbor. - ➤ Marquette—The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is offering free fishing for all in-season species without a license, off-road vehicle riding without a permit, and free access to state parks and boat launches today and tomorrow; residents and visitors must check trail and park details before heading out. - ➤ Marquette residents noticed missed trash pickups and broken or missing carts, and City Manager Karen Kovacs said the city will track these issues and hold Waste Management to its contract. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Medical emergencies from nitrous oxide use increased in Michigan as poison control calls rose 533% and ER visits grew 757% from 2019 to 2024 – most cases occurred among teens and young adults. Marquette County Sheriff said two or three car crashes involved drivers using the gas, and health officials warn its misuse in baking or at the dentist can cause short-term confusion and long-term nerve damage – urging caution. - ➤ AV Rentals has begun construction on a new duplex in downtown Marquette at the corner of Baraga and Fifth Streets to ease the housing shortage. The Marquette County Land Bank Authority said one unit’s rent will be capped at 60% and the other at 120% of the area’s median income, with units expected to be ready by year end — funded by grants from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and InvestUP.
