COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Forsyth Forward will host its first Ride Our Wild bike check event this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Peter Nordeen Park in Gwinn — professionals from Down Wind Sports and Lakeshore Bike will inspect bikes and UPHS Trauma Team will give free helmets to the first 100 kids.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Tickets remain available for the 68th Annual Marquette Kiwanis Chicken Barbeque at Lakeview Arena on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — The funds raised will support local community and youth programs as Brian Jensen urged groups to enter floats and volunteers to assist with the upcoming 4th of July parade.  Sunny 101.9
  • On Wednesday, the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee planted flowers + herbs at the Mariucci Family Beacon House to help teach kids about growing food and to brighten the home for patients and families.   • On Wednesday, Innovate Marquette hosted its Women in Entrepreneurship event at NMU’s Northern Center where guest speaker Lane Clark introduced her anti-excellence approach—urging women to say no and seek help to reduce burnout. CRIME NEWS

  • A man who trafficked meth between the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin was sentenced to seven years in prison and five years on supervised parole by Judge Stella—citing his long criminal record as a sign that similar actions will not be tolerated—while local officials stress the sentence is meant to protect the community.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alexa Haferkorn won the Marquette Blueberry Festival poster contest with her digital piece 'Blueberry Sunset on Washington Street'—selected among almost 50 entries and thousands of community votes—and will receive $400, a festival booth, and promotional placement for her art; the festival takes place Friday, July 25 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Demolition on the old hospital site is now complete and crews have planted grass, but College Ave remains closed since the land is owned by the NMU Foundation + parts are being transferred to Veridea Group. City officials said they will soon review plans for 36 housing units and work on a master plan for the area.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services released the 2025 Eat Safe Fish Guides that show how many servings of different fish are safe to eat based on species, size and where they were caught, and the guidelines for Marquette County cover local spots like Dead River, Greenwood Reservoir and the Chocolay River—helping families know how to make healthy choices.  The Mining Journal
  • UP Health System-Marquette has named Meg McConnell as chief nursing officer effective immediately. She joined the system in early 2023 and brings more than a decade of nursing leadership experience in critical care, emergency medicine, and operational oversight—experience she gained as the assistant chief nursing officer and during her tenure at Haywood Regional Medical Center.  Upper Michigan's Source
