COMMUNITY NEWS

  • McLain State Park in Hancock Township is building an ADA inclusive playground—featuring artificial turf, a sensory dome, and climbing structures—to serve children of all abilities, and it is expected to be finished next week with help from the Michigan Army National Guard.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Women veterans will meet next Thursday, June 12 at 4 p.m. at Marquette American Legion Post 44 for an informal potluck (free to attend) to celebrate Women Veterans Day; organizers hope to expand the gatherings with regular events (such as group hikes and coffee socials) to strengthen bonds among veterans.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At about 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, Marquette police said that a 33-year-old driver from Gwinn had a medical issue while driving eastbound on Wright Street, which caused his car to hit an empty house (708 Wright St.) and inflict extensive damage; he and his two child passengers, ages 5 and 12, suffered minor injuries and were taken to UPHS-Marquette.  The Mining Journal

  • The Lake Superior Community Partnership is hosting summer events to support local businesses in Marquette County. LSCP Outreach & Development Specialist Hanna Westra said the Lake Superior Leadership Academy is accepting applications until August 1 + Business After Hours will be held on Monday, June 9 at the updated Nicolet Bank in Ishpeming with food from the Island + business owners can also sign up for the West End Passport.  Sunny 101.9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Eagle Mine held a public Q&A forum at NMU where officials provided updates on performance, worker safety and how operations impact the environment. The mine will use new sonar technology to monitor its underwater tailings and is collecting community feedback through a survey during June.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer signed House Bill 4345 this week to let Northern Michigan schools waive up to 15 missed instructional days for the 2024–2025 school year due to spring ice storms. Local leaders plan to seek federal aid for storm cleanup and further support.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at UP Health Systems say there are two measles cases in the U.P. but if you have received both doses of the MMR vaccine, you have about a 97% chance to avoid the disease — those who are not vaccinated are at higher risk. Dr. Francis Darr advises anyone with a fever, cough, and rash to call their doctor immediately.  Upper Michigan's Source

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marquette's Planning Commission approved a proposal for a 36-unit housing development on a three-acre parcel on Magnetic Street between Lee and Fourth Street — the project includes townhomes, duplexes, triplexes and six single units — and it will go before the City Commission for final approval before construction begins.  Upper Michigan's Source
