- ➤ Project Jade hosted a golfing fundraiser at Wawonowin Country Club in Champion—raising funds for a sensory-friendly play exhibit at the U.P. Children's Museum. Board member Erica Altobello said the exhibit will include soft play toys, reduced lighting and quieter sound—features planned to support children with autism and wheelchair users. - ➤ On Sunday, about 60 runners and walkers participated in the inaugural ITFD Firefighter Memorial 5k at Westwood High School in Ishpeming Township — a race held to raise funds for the fireman’s association — while earlier that morning the fire department held a memorial service for active and retired firefighters and probationary firefighter Darren Fraser won the race in 25:26.9. - ➤ NORTHIRON Church hosted its 5th annual Community Serve Day on Sunday when nearly 500 members worked in Marquette, Ishpeming, Ontonagon and L’Anse to clean garden beds, repaint a park sign — and plant new flowers at Lake Bancroft Park in Ishpeming. - ➤ On Sunday morning, a boardwalk was dedicated on a marshy section of the North Country Trail to honor Lorana Jinkerson's long service—her engraved sign also includes a land acknowledgement for the Anishinaabe Three Fires Confederacy. - ➤ The Marquette Regional History Center is hosting a walking tour with Jim Koski at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 that shows the history of West Washington Street where churches, gas stations, grocery stores and railroads once stood. - ➤ Lake Superior Community Partnership and 4C of the Upper Peninsula have been awarded two grants totaling $184,000 by the Early Childhood Investment Corporation to expand childcare services across the region until September 30—these funds will support programs like Childcare SPARK in six counties and build a Family Child Care Network to offer training and mentoring for home-based providers. - ➤ Ishpeming is finishing 25,000 feet of sewer main work and will soon start replacing 9.5 miles of water mains for a summer project—temporary water services will cause only about five minutes of interruption per home replacement—residents are asked to stay clear of construction areas for safety. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Marquette County Health Department reported a second measles case in Marquette County, making three cases in the Upper Peninsula — the infected person visited a bank on W. Washington St. in Marquette, a Meijer on U.S. 41, and a bank in Escanaba between May 23 and May 30. Anyone who visited these sites is advised to contact local health officials and watch for measles symptoms for 21 days. The Mining Journal
