COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eagle Mine is asking local residents to take an anonymous survey that will help improve its work on environmental impacts and community support — the survey will run from June 2 to Aug. 1 and each response adds a $5 donation for a local non-profit.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Peter White Public Library will host local angler and professor Tim Schulz for a presentation of his book A Cast Away in Montana on June 9 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in collaboration with the Library of Michigan, and his talk will include reading excerpts and a question-and-answer session.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Burt Township School sophomore William Paul secured a $10,673 grant from the Michigan DNR to improve the deer habitat in his school forest. The funds will cover tree planting, fencing — and other upgrades on 600 acres to help raise low deer numbers in the region.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City staff in Marquette are working with Waste Management to pick up trash missed in some neighborhoods this week—collection is set for Monday, June 2. Residents with missed pickups must place items curbside so they can be collected.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • At the Mackinac Policy Conference, state leaders announced the statewide rollout of the Michigan Home Energy Rebates Program that can offer up to $34,000 in rebates to help households save on utility bills — especially for low and moderate income families. The program builds on a successful pilot in Marquette and Holland and will connect households with approved contractors for needed energy upgrades.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials report a second measles case in the Upper Peninsula—this case is located in Ontonagon and the patient is from Marquette County where the first case was reported earlier this week. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department said the investigation continues with little new information released.  The Mining Journal
  • The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department confirmed a measles case in a Marquette county resident visiting family in Ontonagon county, making it the second case in the region. Marquette county public health director (Dr. Robert van Howe) said the disease can linger in the air for up to 2 hours and urged residents to get vaccinated and seek care if symptoms appear.  WZMQ 19
