COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Emanuel Lutheran Church in Skandia is hosting Plants, Pies & Summer Buys to raise funds for drone and radar technology to digitally map the historic cemeteries; the fundraiser runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UPAWS remains closed in Sands Township for at least two weeks due to a parvovirus outbreak — essential staff stay on site to care for the animals.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Lake Superior Community Partnership hosted an emergency preparedness panel at The Mather as part of Breakfast and Business to help local business and municipal leaders plan for emergencies like snow, fires, and floods. LSCP will hold its next meeting in July.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • SPEX celebrated its grand opening with a public open house on Thursday at 407 S. Lakeshore Blvd., Suite B in Marquette—featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony, complimentary gelato, eyewear collections, raffle prizes and live entertainment. Founded by Dr. Anna Krause, the practice offers patient-centered care focused on eye health and overall wellness.  The Mining Journal
  • Signature Pizza now offers quick pizza service at The Island Resort & Casino with a range of pizzas and cheesy bread sticks. The outlet, next to T. McC’s Sportsbar, is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 5 to 1 a.m.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bothwell Middle School students helped plant red, white + blue flowers on Front Street last Friday to mark America's 250th anniversary, and a follow-up planting is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. with a nearby traffic lane closed.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has banned open debris burning in Upper Peninsula counties and parts of the Lower Peninsula until rain arrives next week as high fire danger persists and firefighting teams remain on standby for rapid response.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Inspector Randal Danison retired after more than 31 years with Michigan State Police & worked at posts in L’Anse, Calumet and Wakefield. He earned awards for lifesaving and professional excellence and now looks forward to spending time with family.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette announced road updates as crack sealing starts Friday (lasting two weeks by Payne and Dolan, Inc.) and milling and repaving begins Monday (set to last three weeks) along several roads. Drivers are urged to heed flagging and traffic control devices in the impacted areas.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marquette Care Clinic is still accepting registration for its Life Walk fundraiser on June 20 at Lower Harbor Park. Walkers can join at 10 a.m. (starting at 2 p.m.) and enjoy a hot dog cookout as the clinic works toward a $30K goal.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Rosters for the 2026 UP All-Star Baseball Game include five players each from Escanaba and Negaunee. The game will take place on June 14 at Al Ness Field in Escanaba with play beginning at 4:00 pm eastern time.  WZMQ 19
  • In the Great Northern Conference baseball awards, Kingsford’s Jack Kriegl and Escanaba’s Mikaiden Hughes share Offensive Player of the Year while Escanaba’s Lennox Peacock earns Pitcher of the Year + team selections for the Dream Team, second team, and honorable mentions were also announced.  WZMQ 19
