  • Golfers teed off last Thursday at Marquette Golf Club as the Rotary Club held its 32nd annual golf outing with 34 teams of four competing in a scramble that featured contests for closest-to-the-pin, hole-in-one, & longest-drive prizes. The club said the funds raised are donated to local nonprofits & organizations to support community projects and hopes this year will exceed last year's $27,000 total.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County nonprofits including Room at the Inn, the Women’s Center and Great Lakes Recovery Centers met at a community leadership gathering hosted by the Community Foundation of Marquette County (CFMC) and Grow and Lead to plan ways to work together and improve services. Organizers said the meeting was a smaller version of the annual Connect and Grow Conference scheduled for Oct. 16 and 17.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in Marquette Township on US-41 at Commerce Drive when an eastbound driver ignored a traffic control device and was taken to UPH Health System for non-life-threatening injuries—while a separate three-vehicle collision near the Red Lobster slowed by traffic injured another driver who was also transported for treatment—with other drivers declining care.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • WNMU-TV will host a hands-on Bob Ross Painting Workshop at Northern Michigan University studios where participants learn the ‘wet-on-wet’ oil painting technique. The workshop, led by Certified Bob Ross Instructor Ted Simpson from Detroit, offers all materials, a free lunch & a station tour on Saturday, June 7 or Sunday, June 8.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MDOT is set to invest about $3 million to resurface 11 miles of M-35 in Marquette County with an asphalt overlay, shoulder work, pavement markings and a rebuilt railroad crossing—work that will begin on June 9 and finish in late July. The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve road conditions and support local travel.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan ranks 47th in inpatient psychiatric bed availability as hospitals recorded 1.2 million ER visits for behavioral health issues last year, leaving the Upper Peninsula short of staffed beds; only two hospitals (UP Health System in Marquette and MyMedical Center in Sault) offer inpatient care. Lawmakers and hospitals are planning to add beds and expand alternative treatment programs (including legislative proposals) to improve access to psychiatric care.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County Health Department identified its first measles case in 30 years on May 29. Health officials said anyone who visited Moonspun Wool from May 19 to May 21 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. — the Marquette Food Co-op on May 20 between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. — or Midas Auto on May 21 between 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. should call 906-475-9977 and watch for symptoms over the next 21 days.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette County Health Department confirmed a measles case in a local resident and is working with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the situation and prevent further cases—this is the first measles case in the U.P. in 2025 and the first in the county in 30 years.  Upper Michigan's Source
