COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette’s Parks and Rec Department cleaned up Tourist Park and Presque Isle Park after a winter of major storms; crews removed downed trees from May 15 until May 21 so the parks are ready for summer use.  The Mining Journal
  • The Rotary Club held its 33rd Annual golf outing today with nearly 150 participants raising about $30,000 for nonprofits such as YMCA + Big Bay Health Camp + Feeding America. President-elect Steve Powers said local sponsors and donor support have helped the fundraiser grow over decades.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Several local and U.P. organizations met at NMU Jacobetti Complex for an Outdoor Summit to discuss managing crowded state parks + improving public access. The summit conversation will continue today at 8 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Records in the Sky show is happening today and will run through Sunday at the Sky Room (the top floor of the Landmark Inn on Front Street) featuring thousands of vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, and VHS videotapes.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marquette-Alger RESA Director Lyndsay Carey said free pre-K programs have led to a 475% enrollment increase in the last five years, helping families save money and preparing children for kindergarten. Families can apply now for the upcoming school year on the MARESA website (transportation and care options available).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Negaunee High School announced its scholarship recipients for the Class of 2026, listing awards such as the Saima Kuivila Salutatorian Scholarship and several others from local entities (including the Negaunee Area Community Fund and Rotary Club of Ishpeming). The list highlights new education opportunities for graduating seniors.  The Mining Journal
  • North Jackson Company (a science and engineering firm) named three Negaunee High School graduates as scholarship recipients, awarding $500 to support college plans; Rheana Nelson will study nursing at NMU, Riley Lovern will study aerospace engineering at Michigan Tech, and Mialie Arbelius will pursue electrical engineering at U of Michigan.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A recount performed today by the Marquette County Board of Canvassers confirmed that every ballot from May 5 matched the reported count for the MAPS 60 million-dollar bond proposal. Officials say the results uphold election integrity, though Superintendent Sedgwick noted the recount may delay financing for future tax levies.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spex, a new optometrist office, cut its ceremonial ribbon Thursday afternoon at 407 S Lakeshore Blvd Suite B, offering inclusive eye care by Dr. Anna Krause (a veteran from Metro Detroit). Opened in early April, the office accepts any insurance.  WZMQ 19
  • RX Kids, the first community-wide prenatal and infant cash program, expanded across the U.P. earlier this year to give expecting mothers $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 monthly for six months to help with essential costs, awarding over $3 million to families and planning expansion to Ohio & Oregon this year.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Thursday, May 28, Kristy Kerkala of Ishpeming Active Clinic explained on Mark & Walt in the Morning how dry needling aids muscle recovery and differs from acupuncture. The technique may benefit many patients seeking improved physical therapy.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marquette’s Sentinels won their third consecutive U.P. title at the MHSAA Division 1 boys golf finals at Sweetgrass Golf Club near Harris on Wednesday by finishing with a 295—nearly 20 strokes ahead of runner-up Escanaba.
