COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The U.P. Foster Closet of Delta County gives free essentials like clothing, bedding, and hygiene items to children in foster care and serves families in Delta County and nearby areas. President Jenny Tourangeau said the group became independent in 2018 and served up to 60 kids in its busiest month last August — a sign of growing need — and urged help for the increasing demand for foster parents.  WZMQ 19
  • The 68th Marquette Kiwanis Club Chicken Barbecue will take place on June 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Arena with $18 tickets, and funds raised will support local nonprofits + the club seeks new members at its Thursday meetings at Big Boy at 7 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Marquette City Fire Department determined the cause of a duplex fire at 107 and 109 Kaye Ave. on May 12 was discarded smoking materials—igniting grass by the southwest deck—and crews extinguished the flames by 4:15 p.m. with no injuries reported.  The Mining Journal

  • The popular VanLandschoot & Sons food truck opened Saturday in Marquette—parked across from McCarty’s Cove on Lakeshore Boulevard. Head Chef Hunter Brown said the truck will soon offer an expanded menu—welcoming locals with its favorite family recipes.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Binary Crows—a Marquette high school robotics team—held a demonstration to boost interest in robotics and related careers while also placing in the top 10% out of 600 teams at the World Championship.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After Memorial Day, summer has arrived in the Upper Peninsula and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources warned residents to follow fire safety tips as conditions can change quickly; authorities advised proper campfire dousing and obtaining permits for debris burning (especially where local rules apply) to lower wildfire risks.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Marquette is hosting pop up shops and workshops today and tomorrow for residents to share ideas on its Active Transportation Plan, which will improve roads for e-bikes and other micromobility devices. Deputy City Manager Sean Hobbins said the plan is partly funded by MDARD (70% match) with city funds covering the rest and will guide future street upgrades when reconstruction occurs.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Active Physical Therapy promoted pelvic treatment services for women during Women’s Health Month as physical therapists Rachel Skaw from Marquette and Kristin Eden from Ishpeming discussed the services on Mark — Walt in the Morning. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers broke ground on May 1 for the Maple Ridge Condominiums project in Negaunee and set the foundation for 25 customizable homes—five have been sold with homes starting at $334,900.
