  • Across the Upper Peninsula, communities observed Memorial Day as ceremonies honored Armed Forces Veterans who died in service—Marquette’s American Legion Post 44 held a service at Holy Cross Cemetery and Park Cemetery while local groups reset flags and headstones to pay tribute.  The Mining Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Officials arrested 10 individuals from the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin in Marinette County after a months-long investigation into a meth trafficking network—each faces charges of conspiracy to deliver over 50 grams of methamphetamine, a Class C felony with penalties of up to 40 years in prison and fines of up to $100,000.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, the West Shore Fishing Museum held a dedication service—ringing maritime bells to honor nearly 50 local fishers and many more lost on Lake Michigan. The museum may replace a gravel path with a memorial walkway—an effort to preserve its commercial fishing heritage.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University honored student-athletes by recognizing Scholar-Athletes of the Month and inducting 114 players into its Chi Alpha Sigma honor society—each athlete meeting a 3.50 GPA requirement during the past school year. Teams from 20 sports earned the honor with juniors and seniors working on their undergraduate degrees.  The Mining Journal

  • Marquette County law enforcement and NMU Police Academy cadets joined state troopers for the Murph Challenge on Memorial Day—completing a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and a final 1-mile run—while honoring Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and observing a moment of silence for a fallen state trooper.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County officials drove to Saginaw on Monday to retrieve overdue autopsy and toxicology reports for county families—recovering 18 reports while 11 remain incomplete for filing death certificates. The Board is considering legal action against the former medical examiner to obtain the remaining files.  The Mining Journal

  • Local camper Tom Morrison said his family’s annual Memorial Day camp at Tourist Park was less crowded than usual due to 40-degree weather, even though staff expected many visitors.
