COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vietnam War veteran Patrick Emmette Rudden died on May 11, a week before his scheduled U.P. Honor Flight; his two sons flew to Washington & attended Mission XXVIII to honor him, recalling how he spent a year looking forward to the trip.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Memorial Day, more than a dozen Iron Coast CrossFit members completed the Murph Challenge to honor fallen Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy and raise funds for the Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation & U.P. Together with Veterans. The event highlighted a community coming together in tribute.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The League of Women Voters of Marquette County will hold its annual meeting and social hour Wednesday, June 3, at Ore Dock Brewing Co. in Marquette. The business meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and is followed by award announcements, pizza, sweets & social time at 7:15 p.m.  The Mining Journal
  • On Monday, May 25, Negaunee held its annual Memorial Day parade along Iron Street with marching bands, Boy Scouts, and first responder vehicles as 96-year-old Korean War veteran Russell 'Stubb' Williams served as guest of honor and grand marshal. Later, a ceremony at the local cemetery honored fallen heroes.  WZMQ 19
  • On May 9, Negaunee Elks Lodge #1116 and the local high school golf team held a pasty sale where 451 pasties were sold, earning $1014.74 for travel and equipment. Beacon Grant funds helped make $350 worth of meals distributed to 50 people in need at Saint Vincent De Paul's.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sarah Smart of the Onagomingkway NSDAR chapter awarded Alyssa dela Cruz, a senior at Norway High, the Good Citizen award for academic success and community work. dela Cruz, who will study animal science at UW-Madison as a pre-vet, won the honor from entries in the western Upper Peninsula.  The Mining Journal
  • On May 14, MI-TRALE offered free hands-on ORV/ATV training at Camp Nesbit near Sidnaw for 36 6th graders who had completed classroom instruction; the students earned their 'Certified To Ride' Safety Certificate & learned safe riding techniques for public trails.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services advises Marquette residents and visitors to avoid foam on surface water as it may contain harmful chemicals or bacteria including PFAS; if contact occurs, rinse off immediately after water activities.  The Mining Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Residents enjoyed Memorial Day weekend outdoors across Marquette County as bikers, hikers, and walkers explored Presque Isle Park and McCarty's Cove. Visitors also took a refreshing dip in Lake Superior as families made the most of the mild weather.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Thursday's dual meet between Negaunee and Marquette high school boys tennis teams ended in a 4-4 tie at the Sentinels' courts with three three-set matches. Division 1 teams meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Patriots' courts in Ishpeming for the U.P. Finals (coaches called it a finals preview).  The Mining Journal
