COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Ely Township for the Barnes-Hecker memorial garden park commemorating Michigan’s largest mining disaster that occurred 100 years ago. The project will be developed this summer and a special November ceremony will honor the 51 men who lost their lives.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Barry Holm, a Gladstone Navy veteran, chose high school senior Jared Quinn as his guardian for Wednesday’s U.P. Honor Flight Mission XXVIII to Washington, D.C. Holm covered the fee for Quinn’s trip and hopes to mentor him as he prepares for military service.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The fourth annual Nick’s Run for Recovery will occur this month, starting at the bell tower at Lower Harbor Park and following Lake Superior’s shore. Entrants pay $45 at Elizabeth’s Chophouse to support recovery for Superior Connections residents (honoring Nick Suardini).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Richard M. Jopling American Legion post 44 will honor fallen service members with two Memorial Day services on Monday, May 25. The service at Park Cemetery begins at 9:30 a.m. and at Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette at 10:30 a.m., followed by light snacks.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy's 2026 Summer Travel Survey forecasts that gas will average $4.48 per gallon on Memorial Day, up from $3.14 last year, and may hit record highs this summer if the Strait of Hormuz stays closed - many Americans plan road trips using savings tools to find lower prices.  The Mining Journal
  • Organizers kicked off the inaugural Michigan Sustainable Tourism Summit on Thursday to boost sustainable travel and the U.P. economy. The four-day event in Keweenaw (led by Brad Barnett) will host lectures and workshops from groups like Leave No Trace and MSU Extension.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lakeview Elementary fourth-graders visited Van Riper State Park Wednesday for Nature Awaits, a program by the DNR to bring classroom lessons outdoors. The field trip taught students about the water cycle, invasive species and Native American traditions.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A contractor hauling treated biosolids spilled an estimated four cubic yards on U.S. 41 near the treatment plant in Little Lake on Thursday morning—cleanup used heavy equipment and a street sweeper, and officials confirmed no waterway was impacted. The Michigan Department of Energy and Great Lakes was notified.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Late last week, Wayne Stiles, a congressional candidate, visited Marquette Senior High School to speak with two AP Political Science classes about his grassroots campaign and local solutions for healthcare and housing challenges (he emphasized practical policy changes in rural areas).  The Mining Journal
  • Gov. Whitmer announced that MDOT will ease travel for Memorial Day weekend by lifting lane restrictions on 100 of 168 projects at 3 p.m. today plus barriers will be removed until 6 a.m. Tuesday, helping more than 1.3 million travelers hit the roads.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Negaunee High School softball team secured three wins this week by beating Houghton on Monday and Hancock on Wednesday. They will host Calumet next Tuesday for a doubleheader and then start district tournament play next Friday.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette Senior High School's boys tennis team shared the Great Northern Conference championship with Kingsford on Tuesday at Escanaba, finishing with 27 points with Escanaba earning third with 17. Coach Karl Thomsen said the team recovered from doubles setbacks and is preparing for the U.P. Championships next Wednesday.  The Mining Journal
