- ➤ The Marquette Kiwanis Club will host its drive-in barbeque on June 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lakeview Arena for $18 per meal that includes ½ chicken, baked potato and sides—proceeds support local charities. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Chocolay Township Fire Department reported that crews arrived just before noon on Wednesday at a fire on Cherry Creek Road (near Valley Road) in Chocolay Township where two sheds (one larger and one smaller) burned, and police assisted an individual in distress with no injuries while the cause remains under investigation. - ➤ Greenwood, a small community in Ely Township west of West Ishpeming, grew around a blast furnace built in 1865 and thrived until the plant closed in 1875 when the forests were gone and hard times hit. Czechoslovakian immigrants later built a farm on land now under Greenwood Reservoir + a nature center was started, and a local history talk will be held at the Marquette Regional History Center on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. The Mining Journal

- ➤ The Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority received a national award for water quality work last month and will use a $7 million grant to build a new reverse osmosis treatment facility. The new system — designed to treat water with high PFAS — will allow the landfill to remove most lagoons and lower leak risks. WZMQ 19
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Marquette Township board voted Wednesday to update its animal control ordinance so that residents may soon be fined if their dog is off-leash on township property. Township Manager Jon Kangas said law enforcement will issue citations starting at $150 and increasing to $450 for repeat offenses, with the rule set to take effect after publication in the Mining Journal in about five weeks. - ➤ Marquette County’s Brownfield Authority received a $400K EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant to evaluate 265 contaminated sites, with funding slated for October 1 after final regulatory approval—officials say the grant will help prepare blighted properties for future redevelopment and job creation.
