COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seven teams are set to compete on Oct. 8 at Kaufman Auditorium during A Night Under the Big Top to raise funds for U.P. Hospice Foundation. Tickets cost $50 and audience members may vote online.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Salvation Army is testing mobile pantries in Baraga County at Gwinn schools until the end of May plus will resume service at the start of the school year to help those struggling with high gas prices and long travel distances.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Petunia Pandemonium brightens Marquette next weekend as Bothwell Middle School students plant patriotic reds, whites and blues on the east side of US-41 on Friday, May 29 while local volunteers tend the west side on Saturday, May 30 (marking the 39th annual event) to welcome visitors.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette Kiwanis Club announced that Peggy and Peter Frazier will serve as marshals in the July 4 parade, which will start at 2 p.m. at the intersection of West Washington and McClellan Avenue; organizers are seeking 10+ volunteers to serve as crossing guards and car drivers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Habitat for Humanity launches Women Build 2026 as a three-day volunteer event from May 28 through May 30 for those new to construction. Participants can learn homebuild skills + hear a guest speaker share insights while a $25 donation helps cover costs.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Silent Harbor Tactical, which began as an online store in 2025, opened a brick-and-mortar shop Friday morning at 2294 US-41 to offer firearms, magazines, hunting tools and gunsmithing services + streamlines paperwork with online I.D. checks.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in our area increased 11 cents this week, averaging $4.84 per gallon so a full tank costs about $73. This rise comes as drivers prepare for Memorial Day weekend with Delta County at $4.42 and Chippewa at $5.01.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Gas prices have risen $1.64 since last year, and more than 1.3 million Michiganders will travel 50 or more miles for Memorial Day weekend. AAA and GasBuddy advise drivers to use cruise control between 60 and 65 mph + keep their tanks above a quarter full to avoid costly pump repairs.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • UPHS – Marquette was reverified on Monday as a Level II trauma center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma — it remains the only ACS COT-verified trauma center in the Upper Peninsula.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital launched the Upper Peninsula's first targeted nuclear medicine service (Pluvicto therapy for advanced prostate cancer) on Monday, partnering with Green Bay Oncology to bring specialized care closer to home.  Upper Michigan's Source
