COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette Lions Club will install a new sign at its historic park and complete landscaping improvements by fall and June 1, with work preserving the park’s view of Lake Superior. The club raised $25,000 + $5,000 from community partners and donations for the project.  The Mining Journal
  • Forsyth Township EMS hosted an open house Sunday for EMS Week in Gwinn to let residents watch CPR and stop-the-bleeding demos and learn about EMS equipment — the event honored volunteer first responders balancing community service with full-time jobs.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan copper was a key force behind the Union win in the Civil War, as mines on the Keweenaw Peninsula produced most of the metal needed for weapons and equipment. This historic mining legacy continues to shape our region’s identity.  The Mining Journal

  • State officials advise drivers to be extra cautious as warmer weather brings more motorcyclists onto local roads this month. The Michigan Department of State’s 'Look Twice. Save a Life' campaign urges increased following distance & careful scanning to prevent collisions.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ishpeming hosted a Division-3 track meet at the Hematites track on Wednesday where standout athletes Kemper Gearhart and Sophie Mahoski helped secure qualifying spots for the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals scheduled in Kingsford on May 30.  The Mining Journal
  • At the hockey world championships in Switzerland on Sunday, former NMU players Atte Tolvanen and Kristof Papp faced off as Tolvanen stopped 17 shots to help Austria beat Hungary 4+2; Papp assisted on Hungary’s final goal, leaving Austria 2-0 and Hungary 0-2 in Group A.  The Mining Journal
  • Negaunee High School boys varsity tennis team captured its fifth straight championship Friday at the Invitational Tournament. The Miners finished with 32 points to edge Marquette by one point and Kingsford by six, setting up tougher U.P. Finals matchups next week (Miners).  The Mining Journal
